MATERIAL UNIVERSE PERFORMANCE
SP ARTE - GALERIA RABIEH, SÃO PAULO
April 2-5 2014
IN MATERIAL UNIVERSE, LOHER TEAMS UP WITH PERFORMANCE ARTIST GEOFF SOBELLE TO EXPLORE OUR RELATIONSHIP TO “THINGS.” LOHER/SOBELLE HAVE REIMAGINED SOBELLE’S FULL LENGTH PERFORMANCE WORK THE OBEJCT LESSON AS A MOBILE ART OBJECT AND A WEARABLE PERFORMANCE MEDITATION ON PROPERTY, POSSESSION AND COLLECTING.
Sobelle’s performance plays with the familiar/unfamiliar relationship to ordinary objects as he slowly moves through a gallery setting entirely covered with “everyday things.” He continues his collection as he moves through the crowded environment.
In Material Universe, Loher/Sobelle make literal the adage, “Our objects are a reflection of who we are...” We collect things. Things collect dust. Sobelle collects things like things collect dust.
Loher&Sobelle have added deconstructed text from Swiss playwright Max Frisch’s “Fragebogen” (Questionnaire) in this playful meditation on time, permanence and possession.
Performance is generally experienced as a time-based art: here one moment, gone the next... In Material Universe, the moment is held; but held in a thin glass bubble - which feels as transient as the moment itself, as fragile as our attachment to it.
Simultaneously to the performance Loher/Sobelle's video-sculpture Material Universe is presented by Lourdina Jean Rabieh at Booth C2.
